Software and Vocal Analysis

Software for sonograms, spectrograms, formants, overtones manipulation. How is important the electronic process in your music?

    HARMONIC VISION audiovisualization program, 1998-2008

Greetings, Following the "In Light of Sound" work I did in the 80s and early 90s with physical cymatics procedures for visualizing Harmonic Chant (following my early years in experimental cinema), since about 1998 I've developing software applications for transforming Harmonic Chant into visual and video art and projections, first in collaboration with the makers of "Videodelic" and "Onadime." The program is called "Harmonic Vision" and currently works on Mac OS X. It is based on the MAX/MSP platform. The program has been primarily developed for our Harmonic Presence Foundation projects. For example, it was used in our recent evening for the Mind and Life Institute at the Garrison Institute. As you may know, the MLI brings together neuroscientists from around the world with contemplative practitioners to explore how contemplative practice changes consciousness and the brain.

The Foundation is exploring a limited commercial release of the software as a way to help raise funds for our philanthropic work in the area of human rights, especially Tibet.

As for musical software, I use primarily ProTools and Logic. My preferred microphones are those made by Microtech Gefell.

    Thanks David,
    very interesting.
Sometimes I use Max/MSP too, but it needs many time to create patches. My cardiac problems are finished (do you rimember?), so when I have more time we meet, finally!

    My useful equipment:

How you can see in my video collection i am using the OVERTONE ANALYZER by www.sygyt.com for visualizing my overtones and also for voice analysis in my vocal coaching praxis. The optical feedback in real time on a monitor is quiet useful to improve the singing performance, so i recommend to use it regularly.

In concerts i like to use natural or artificial reverb and delay for the following reason: During the inspiratory time the effective energy of sound on a physical level stays at work. Therefore i use the VOCAL PROCESSOR VX400 by Digitech, when a perfect acoustic room is missing.

As a very practical MOBILE RECORDING SYSTEM the H4 by Zoom is my permanent companion.

I am still in quest of suitable microphones for harmonic singing...What is your recommendation?
  • Marco Tonini

    Hi Miroslav,
yes, the optical feedback in real time is very important, I use it with my opera-singers students to develop extra-formant. But for this I use Audition, too.
For the mic question, I think that a good mic is useless without a good sound-board and a good equalization, and vice versa.

Thank you for inviting me to your group.
HOpe to learn more things about audio softwares.
    Best,

    Dear Miroslav,
I have the Overtone Analyzer but I don't know how to use it properly. I am very much impressed by your document sent on this network with spectral picture in real time . Can you teach me how to do it ?
    Many thanks ahead,
    Tran Quang Hai
  • Bodo Maass

    Hi Marco,
    Thanks for creating this group.
I just wrote a beginners guide to microphones for the purpose of using it with analysis software. You can find it here: http://www.sygyt.com/en/microphone-guide

    Best wishes,
    Bodo
  • Marco Tonini

    Great Bodo!
    That can be very useful.
What do you think about software in discussion forum? (Look up)
  • Marco Tonini

    Hi Tran,
I hope this discussion is useful for all people, for me too.
    Thank you.
  • Marco Tonini

    Hi Renaud,
    thank you.
  • Marco Tonini

    Hi Miroslav,
you use H4 Zoom. What do you think about? Some friends don't work well with it, but if I can buy it I need your opinion.
  • Raphael De Cock

    Ciao Marco,
    Grazie mille per invitarmi.
I will check this all out quite soon. Since a while now I would like to initiate or provoke a scientific research on the use of overtones in Sardinian "a tenore" singing. You seem to be the guys busy in that field :-)
    Cheers

    Raphael
  • Marco Tonini

    Ciao Raphael,
this group is full open to all, I have invited somebody to involve more people. Thanks to be here.
Sardinian tenores is a vocal emission that I like analyze by spectrograms and sonograms.
  • Stuart Hinds

Hi Marco. Thanks for the invitation. I look forward to checking it out. Stuart
  • Sw. Deva Sakshi

Thanks for invitation, I I really enjoy using the analyzer !
    Look forward

Perhaps the group members might like to tell us what software they are currently using, what they use it for, and how they like it. I would be interested to see that. Thanks! Sh
  • Filip Rydlo

    Good idea, Stuart!

Well, I use Sibelius 3 for writing down scores of overtone melodies which I would like to learn. And I really like this software. I usually create one "tenor"-G-key and another G-key above it with "flute" instrument and I transpose it "sounding octave higher" - so there appears little "eight" symbol in upper index of the G-key. While writing the notes I put there also numbers under the tenor part. (We probably all know: Overtones are two times, three times, four times etc... higher than the base freqency), so I write there the "number of times" the freq.is higher - just like it is numbered in Overtone Analyzer! :)

I dislike other numberings! I feel it only mystify me and people that use it. But I have seen one, yesterday! Oh, how terrible experience for me. :(
I would like to create discussion here, or maybe a new group for this topic, about overtone numbering system.

And when I cannot find some tone by hearing it then
I use Overtone Analyzer to find out. :)
  • Filip Rydlo

If I create group "International overtone numbering" to discuss an international overtone numbering system who of You would join? :)
  • Marco Tonini

    Me!!
  • Marco Tonini

    Hi Sol,
sorry but I see your comment only now. This is not the right place to ask something because here there is not a feedback control, so we cannot know when people write a comment. You must write as a reply on a forum above, then you can click on the FOLLOW ME button, so you will receive a email when people will answer to you.
I don' use EGG. It can be a very important tool, but for me it si not necessary. If you want try it with a little fee you can buy the complete set of Vocevista, 50 euro for book (with a good explanation about EGG)+software and 700/800 euro for EGG.

To opera singer I suggest Overtone Analyzer and Adobe Audition.
For free I suggest a software that allow you to see sonogram and spectrogram in real time, like Visual Analyzer.
Can be, in the future, there will be an "Overtone Analyzer" free demo version.

    Bye
