Overtone Music Network

a common space & database for harmonic overtones

I have just been to the Voice Symposium conference in Salzburg, where I got the new book Resonance in Singing by Donald Miller, the author of the program VoceVista.

The book is about how to use his vocal analysis software to study and learn resonance strategies to achieve an optimal sound (mainly from a classical singers point of view). In our terminology, it is about how to adjust the vocal tract and the mouth such that the important harmonics are optimally amplified (something overtone singers take to the extreme).

Donald also says that LPC (linear predictive coding, a method for finding formants) is of limited usefulness for analyzing singing, because it only works for very low frequencies and is therefore more for speech.

I'll post a full review here once I have finished the entire book and have done the exercises. But I can already say that it is highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about vocal analysis software.

Hi Bodo,
I know Vecevista, but I don't use it.
I think that its EGG (electroglottography), very useful to understand vocal troubles, is important but not really necessary to singing teachers.
The feedback control is a very good system, I use it too with other real-time softwares since many years, and it is allows singers to amplify formants to obtain exact sound effects. For example, the real-time control and modelling of "singing formant" (nearly F3-F4-F5) of opera singers is fantastic.
Hi Bodo,
about EGG: I'm working with a phoniatric and otolaryngologist, very famous here in Italy. In their opinion (and in all phoniatrics world) EGG is not very important for vocal analysis.
HI BODO:

How was your "Resonance in Singing" reading?
Have you already practice with your Vocevista software?

Looking forward share us your experiences with VV software.

Best greetings
Sol Herrera
