Overtone Music Network

a common space & database for harmonic overtones

Hello everyone!

Since instruments such as the igil, doshpuluur, and morin khuur are harder to find, making them more difficult to purchase (and everything is more fun to make) I am curious if anyone has any first-hand experience in constructing one, or something similar?

I was thinking about tackling this project sometime in the near future and was hopeful to gain as much insight as possible before advancing. No detail is too small.. If you have any advice or encouragement, I'd love to hear it!

I am a somewhat novice woodworker, but have a reasonable enough amount of shop experience to know this is doable.

Thanks to all readers and posters! Maybe this can help someone else on the same path?

I guess that a corollary question could be, does anyone know a master craftsman who takes students?

Sounds incredible. I have never constructed one or purchased one myself.

It turns out that Imre has experience in building the igil. I'll definitely be asking him questions while we're on the road next Spring! For now, I think I'll just make a hand drum. It's nearing deer hunting season so I can probably get some hide to tan from a friend of mine and truly make it from scratch.

Seems you know Imre... But there is others who have made Tuvan instruments, like JP Lilja: https://www.facebook.com/taidesoitinpaja/?fref=ts
and atleast Jari Ilmonen, Sami Jansson and Eero Turkka. I have made some fun-doshpulurus from tennis racket and 2 dollar tambourine. Certainly want and will do some instruments...

Thank you Sauli, I liked JP on facebook so I'll be exploring that page thoroughly. I'll look into befriending the other contacts that you gave me as well. I'll keep you posted on me progress here.

Do you have any pictures of your tennis raquet doshpulurus? How does it sound?

I have begun friends! The decision of igil construction has been made. That particular instrument I am very fond of and has been the intention the whole time. Getting a little help from some friendly folks so thanks to those that have helped and those that may read this post going forward! I'm far from done, so if you see something you would like to comment about, please do! The wood used in this project is called "poplar" and I must say I have found an excellent piece. There is good change in grain color (at I think what is called a "sap line") and that is where I will be carving out the soundbox. Should make for a beautiful instrument. Luckily the sap line gives me enough room to make the neck of the igil out out of just one side of the line. It just so happened that the orientation that I picked (based on the grain of the wood) made it just so! I've been told that the section wood on the side of the sap line that I will be making the neck out of is also the harder side of the wood's composition. Feeling very fortunate with this project and all things seem to be aligning. On the last pic you will see some raw hide that I am drying. I have more pictures of the entire process and I started from a fresh hide harvested from a beautiful and strong local buck. For this post I just wanted you to see the final look of the rawhide as it dried on the rack. I am simultaneously making some leather with the rest of the hide and I put the rawhide in mild starting tanning solution with the leather, but only for a short duration. The hide was folded so that it gave it that neat dark and light patterning you see.
