Hi John,
the article is on 'classic' metal. Of course the tritone and minor second were also important then, but mostly as melodic intervals and not as chordal structures.

Of course dissonance plays an important role in metal, and bands like Slayer make frequent chordal use of the tritone, still I´m pretty sure that jazz musicians use dissonant intervalls much more often as parts of chords.

I love the way Andreas Kisser of Sepultura uses beatings on their album 'Roots'.

Generally, I´m bored by esoteric overtones, but this video is so over the top, it´s just great. I saw Rollin Rachele a few years ago at an overtone festival in Belgium. I was fascinated by his enigmatic presence and this video deepens this fascination.

Thanks for making this.

I found an article by Esa Lilja on

Characteristics of Heavy Metal Chord Structures

http://ethesis.helsinki.fi/julkaisut/hum/taite/lt/lilja/

Among other things, it analyzes the 'acoustics of the loud an distorted' - distorted electric guitar sounds, which has a lot to do with the harmonic partials and their combination tones.

It explains the the richness and complexity of the distorted guitar sound and it´s use by bands such as Judas Priest or Black Sabbath.

Because of the complexity of the sound, these bands guitar players mostly use dyads of fith or fourth, because other intervalls cause to much beating - unwanted combination tones.

I noticed similarities between distorted  guitar sounds and throat singing before, here comes the academic insight into these matters.

YEAH!
