Tsuur flute by Sam C=' with vocal drone- self made from flower stem

Improvisation sur une flute de type tsuur (mongolie), avec bourdon vocal, fabriquée à partir d'un tige d'ombellifère, comme le sont les flutes mongoles originelles.

Improvisation on self made tsuur flute (mongolia), with vocaldrone. Made out of umbelifer flower stem, as were made the ancient mongolian instruments.

I started making these kind of flute about 2 years ago. I've been quite lucky with this one, as the shape of the stem seem to be quite OK to get upper notes. It respond quite well, to my taste, even if it's very different from the wooden mongolian tsuur I own.
Hope you'll like this. C='

Hi Sam!

Your Tzuur sounds very nice. I would like to try making a Tzuur myself. Here are growing some asian plants, that might be very suiteable for doing so. Would you tell me the measurement of yours or is it a secret ?  Axel

I am also wishing to make my own tsuur-like flute. So far I have acquired two layouts for finger holes, but have been too chicken to cut or drill my pipe, lol. I gotta get on that one of these days...

Hi Axel, thanks for your comment.

I don't own this flute anymore, as it has been sold, but you can get some info about measurements on Steve Sklar's khoomei forum :

tsuur topic

You'll have to make some tries and little change due to diameter and global shape, but in this topic you'll find the basis I worked on.

What kind of plant do you plan to use ? I'm curious about this.

@Dan : you definitely have to DRILL some holes and see what comes out... try this flute, man ;-)

Is it possible to pick out overtones from your rich drone like in sygit simultaniously with playing the tsuur?
Comment by Sam MOUROT on January 23, 2011 at 11:35am
Hi Iver,
you know this flute is sometime called"höömii flute", and the drone is IMO like a soft höömii voice. If I push the throat voice harder, I can get some high pitched overtones. Control it would be tricky for now, as I have to keep the embouchure correct to blow the tsuur.

J'en ai fait en 20, et aussi plus petit, ça marche ... Les flutes originelles que j'ai on un diamètre aux environ de 20.

Yes Sam, it is tricky to keep the tsuur going and making höömii with pregnant overtones on the same time. I try to get a good sound tsuur flute with so little air pressure as possible than it almost works. The tsuur should sound stronger than the singing in it I believe.

Here my first try in making a tsuur from a widegrowing plant "Fallopia japonica". It took me half an hour and a little knife to make it. Later I treated it with shellac to protect it from moisture.
I will add some pictures and a video in a few minutes.
