Description
In 1978 Charly Wintermeyer went to India in order to study Indian classical music (Hindustani – means north Indian style). Having spent six years learning the tabla, the important north Indian drum popularised in the west by Zakir Hussain, and having given four years to the study of the art of singing, in 1990 he took up the traverse Indian bamboo flute (Bansuri). All together Charly spent about 20 years in India. He always felt a deep connection with the Indian culture and by means of his music assumed the role of an envoy of Indian culture. On the other hand he is extremely open to experimental styles which his worldmusic projects and different chill out and ambiance recordings give evidence for. Tours in Germany Portugal, France and Ireland.
since then many other musical journeys followed. a trip to thailand and laos ,was specially bneficial. charly played in a big buddha cave in laos near vang vieng and the footage can be seen on youtube. a trip to japan in 2010 led him to yamauto festival and brought about a new musical friendship beetween isaac mathis and charly. tag charly wintermeyer on youtube and you find more than 30 videos, of which many are recorded in japan. Biography
Charly ' s passion is the traverse Indian bamboo flute which is famous for its warm and overtone rich sound. It is also called "bansuri". He has been a professional musician since the beginning of the nineties of the last century. Tours brought him to many places in Europe and the rest of the world. He initiated the ethno fusion group "Ganga & Friends", together with Bouggy Wheeler he played on the group "Blue Karma" which had a unique musical style, combining ethnic music and rock and pop elements from the seventies. The group existed for three years and played and toured extensively in France and Germany.

The dance project "Kajal Sonali & Ensemble" features Kajal Sonali as a Kathak dancer, Akaash Wintermeyer as a tabla player and Charly Wintermeyer on bamboo flutes. The ensemble played on numerous festivals, like Ramsen festival, Singen Hohentwiel festival, important dance venues like "Shakti" dance studio Duisburg and many other places. Wintermeyer played on the grop "Trishakti" with the famous guitar player Georg Lawall from 2004 to 2006. The group played several times on the Kirchheim music night and in many venues in Germany and India.
Wintermeyer is featured on 16 CD s with differnt groups. Since 1992 he has played about 1100 live concerts.

1994: Founding "GANGA & FRIENDS“, first recordings "KASHI DAYS“, "KRISHNA'S FLUTE“, "INDIJERI“ (available on music casette only)

1996: CD "FLYING EAST“ - Accoustic music. Fusion of Indian and other Asian elements with European contemporary music.Rich in sounds that enhance inner peace and balance but with an engaging presentation.

1997: „AIR SPRITS“

1998: "KRISHNA'S ETERNAL FLUTE“ Solo CD with the Munich based sarangi player Bernardo Lal Mishra. The sarangi is a north Indian bowed instrument with about 36 sympathetic strings. It is also called "THE VOICE OF A HUNDERED COLORS".

2000: "FINAL CONCLUSION“, this CD blends Indian music with Jazz elements. Both, at his performances and in the studio Charly Wintermeyer is often accompanied by guest musicians on extravagant instruments(ex.;waldzither, ghattam, santoor, singing bowls etc.).Charly is a lyrist, a composer and a performer. His universe expands from the orient to the spirit of jazz, from Indian music to healing music.

In 2003 - "CITY OF LIGHT" - Charly Wintermeyer completed two more productions, one featuring the Indian sitar player Debasish Sanyal. On this CD Akaash Wintermeyer plays the tabla.Thumrees (Indian light classical music)and Bhajans (devotional songs) are presented on the bamboo flute, accompanied by the sitar to produce moving and original duets.

The CD "The Golden Duo Anuradha and Anamika" introduces Bhajans (devotional songs) and Ghazals (muslim influenced light music with texts dealing with the good side of life, being very popular) sung by two female vocalists. The backgroud music is multi-dimensional: Spanish guitar, dholak drum , bass guitar, tabla, bamboo flutes, sarangi and harmonium.

With Bouggy Wheeler, a Breatgne, France based singer, German in origin and a very good Blues and Rock singer. The CD Discovery was released. Bouggy plays a modified resonator guitar(Dobro) sounding like a Sitar which he calls a "Sibro". The name of the group, that existed for 3 years from 1999 to 2001, was "Blue Karma". It icorporated a lot of styles in its seventies/worldmusicfusion and played many concerts in Germany and France.

Another project of Charly is "Heaven N0.7", a studioproject using the electronic medium and accustic instruments blending it into a unique ethno-trance. Tabla players are Akassh Wintermeyer and Stefan Mitter, Dr. Johannes Niessing on guitar and synthesizers and Hans Lingen programming and vocoders. Charly on chimes, percussion, bamboo flutes, vocals and recitations, zither and keyboards. The project released five CD ' s and one sampler.
