Missionary work in Tuva and Mongolia usuing overtone singing

Recently I have been looking into missionary work in the Altai region in which "indigenous" music forms--like xoomi/overtone singing--are being researched or even used for spreading the presence of "The Lord". Here is one video from Mongolia: Psalm sung with xoomi with western instrumental back up, posted by Heart-Sounds.org:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pccNVrBV7Ss&feature=relatedHeart-sounds.org, a missionary…See More

"I've heard/read similar things about the number of xoomi singers in China's Xinjiang region and Inner Mongolia, that there were a fair number before Communism, but they were discouraged until there were only a few left. It's…"

"ON probably already is censored due to all the Tibetan references. The other thing is that beer is German AND Belgian AND Czech, so if all these countries say it is their heritage, that's understandable. It doesn't mean it's only from…"

"It's a tough issue because there are certainly Mongolian xoomi singers in Inner Mongolia. However, the Chinese government is probably trying to project a favorable image of itself by acting to "protect" its minorities and their…"

Profile Information

About me:
I am currently a grad student at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, USA, pursuing an MA in ethnomusicology with a focus on Mongolian music and an interest in nomadic musics in general. Before ever contemplating becoming an "ethnomusicologist" I lived in Mongolia for two years learning xoomi and performing in traditional and non-traditional music contexts. There, I collaborated with Altan Urag, played at the Roaring Hooves Festival, with Steve Tromans and the U-Bop jazz trio, even a short-lived death metal band. I also have a particular interest in the tsuur.
Instruments:
Contrabass, guitar, tsuur, some dombra.
Influences:
Learned xoomi/overtone singing in Mongolia with Enkhjargal (the flute player of Tumbash, not the morin khuurch) then under Ganbold, followed by some lessons with Hosoo. Otherwise, as usual, there are too many to list. But they have ranged from Chopin to Mingus to my friends.
