"that I can play an overblow with the velum fully open is wrong: I could not eaven play a normal blow note, because the air would not go through the harmonica but through the nose, because that would mean less resistance.... but as it is possible to play while "leaking" a little air through a not fully closed velum - fore example to waist air, if there are too many draw and too few blow notes, I can get at least 1 overblow sometimes better with a little "leakage" through the velum than without, that is what I actually meant to say ..."

Rowan was so friendly to give an English translation about this Khoomii lesson by Sundui, followed by two traditional melodies.

"To do exercises, you have to use the constricted voice of the "khoomii" (throat singing).

We use the vowels A, E, I, O, U, Ü to perform the exercises.
Let me demonstrate it for you.

(1st singing)

After this we connect it to the khoomii (tongue).

(2nd singing)

For beginners, you have to know the difference between making a sound from high and lower in the throat. Let me show you the one with making a sound from low.

(3rd singing)

Now you can connect it with your nasal pasages (open your sinus).

(4th singing)

There's also constricting high in the throat way from near and make sounds only with the voice.

(5th singing)

There's also sounding from afar.

(6th singing)

Aside from this, there's also a style called "harhiraa", or root constriction, here's how it sounds

(7th singing)

Then you can bring the constriction up,

(8th singing)

These are the types of constriction you have to learn to do khoomii."
Does Khoomei actually translate to the throat or the singing? It appears that 'throat singing' is the term westerners bestowed on the form much like 'didgeridoo' is the western word for 'yidaki'. Harmonic singing' refers only to the harmonics, 'harmonic chanting' only refers to the chanting option, 'overtone singing' ignores undertones... I know it's a bit of a mouthful but perhaps it'd be more accurate to call our form of singing 'lips, tongue, nose and throat singing'. '

By this app you can understand and look at the vocal tract movements and their audio effects. You can modify the resonance cavities (and formants) that are in relation with our timbre perception.

The source of a vocal sound is a periodic complex signal, full of harmonic frequencies that will be filtered by the vocal tract cavities.

So the intensity of some frequencies can be increased, some of these frequencies will resonate more than others.

The rule is very simple:

larger spaces in the vocal tract will resonate at lower frequencies

smaller spaces resonate at higher frequencies

You can verify it:

rounding lips on any vocal sound. So you increase the vocal tract lenght, with lowering of all the resonant frequencies.

moving down the larynx, with the same acoustic result.

moving the tip of the tongue forward (overtone singing), because decreasing the space of the cavity near teeth you develop F2, the second formant, developing higher harmonics.

playing and trying with VTDemo, or looking at the formant variations on a power spectrum.

You can modify the parameters of VTDemo (thanks to Shinji Maeda, Johan Liljencrantz and Gunnar Fant) in real time or setting a sequence of actions.
